Authentic bank statements carry metadata tied to core banking systems. A statement dated January 2025 but created last Tuesday is an immediate red flag as is a producer field reading "Photoshop" or "Canva." Even scrubbed metadata is a signal: its absence where it should exist is just as suspicious.

What to look for
  • PDF producer field showing consumer software (Photoshop, Word, Canva) instead of a banking system
  • Creation or modification date that post-dates the statement period
